Message From Your President - June 2020

This month’s message will start with a warning and ironically it is not about your welfare from a virus, but instead it goes back to a common plague that is perpetrated on people in our age group.  Recently, I received information from several members stating that they are receiving phone calls requesting their Medicare information and the old scam “Your Grandson has been arrested and needs bail money!”.  Some have reported individuals posing as census officials, knocking on their doors, asking for valid ID, and then attempting to gain entry to homes.  In many cases these individuals have some of your vital information, but not all.  They will attempt to fish for the information they do not have.  Do not get caught up in their conversations and by no means do not provide them your personal information.

Remember, if government agencies need to contact you, they will send you a letter and census takers will not be going door to door during this crisis.  The census requests have already been sent through the mail and can be completed online or returned by mail.  We have also received information about a scam involving a female in a red pickup truck, either knocking on your door or walking up to you and asking for money.  She is soliciting this money for personal use.  Once again, do not engage in conversation with these individuals.  Any information you can procure from these attempts needs to be reported to the police department. These individuals are con artists and criminals.  They will fleece or rob you without remorse.  It shameful that we not only have to worry about a virus, but because we are containing ourselves at home, we are more susceptible to these perpetrators and the scams they bring with a ring of your phone, a doorbell or a hello!  Be safe and wary of these individuals, their actions do nothing more than disrupt your life and cause you great financial harm.

I would like to address recent calls to the office and to the Trustees asking when members will be able to use the clubhouse facilities.  Your Board will not be opening the clubhouse facilities and their amenities unless we can ensure the safety of the membership.  I would refer to a message, from Vince DeChiaro, Vice President, in this issue of the Southwind referring to the efforts of the Board working toward that end.  Vince has been tasked with researching the details of our reopening and the procedures that will need to be implemented.  Vince’s research will allow us to move forward with the opening process once we receive authorization from the State of NJ with direction for safety measures.

The Board has also checked with legal counsel and the HOA association we participate in concerning our responsibilities to the association, ethically, legally and the implementation of possible safety measures upon reopening.  As we all know, we have entered virgin territory and are constantly schooling ourselves to ensure that we are on the right path.   The demographics of our community place all of us in a group with higher susceptibility to this virus and should any of us become symptomatic the impending results could be severe.  It is important that your Board maintains an acceptable level of safety for our community and why we all must maintain social distancing and use proper personal protection.  The Board is anxious to open the clubhouse and its amenities, but I repeat, will only do so placing the safety of the members first. I recently heard a saying that stuck in my head, not exactly polished or even politically correct, but factual under current circumstances: “Mask it or casket.”

I would like to express my thanks once again to all the essential personnel, first responders, and health care providers that are putting their lives on the line for us daily, even more as we move forward during these trying times.  Their exposure to this virus is exponential with every passing day.  Yet they still continue their journey to ensure the safety and well being of the many.  We could not get through this without these special people.  God bless them, their families, and their valiant efforts.

Also remember, we are in our election period.  With the new election process in place, we are now in compliance with the Radburn Act.  Candidates running for an available seat on the Board of Trustees have their biography highlighted in the Southwind.  Members will be receiving an envelope in the mail with ballots and instructions as to the voting process and those instructions will also be in this issue of the Southwind.   Please review the list of potential candidates and vote for the persons of your preference. It is important that everyone participates in the process to ensure your individual voices are heard.

I will end this month with the following quote: “Everyone wants progress, but not everyone likes the associated change that is required to accomplish that progress.”

Your Board of Trustees continues to meet weekly using video conference calls to maintain communication and monitor the association’s business needs.  During these trying times, technology permits your Board to remain safe and continue to provide service to the community.  Until further notice, Homeowner’s Meetings scheduled for 2020 are postponed.  After this emergency has passed, we will announce future meeting dates in the Southwind.  We on the Board look forward to seeing everyone in the very near future.  Until then, stay safe and healthy.

My best to everyone,
Mike Signorile
President
