MAY 2018

It’s May. That means BOCCE! We’ve already started our Saturday training and practice games. Whether you are a member or not come by. We start at 1:30 (or earlier). Some of us grab lunch nearby or share food on the picnic table. We play, we let loose, we enjoy, and we like company.

Stop by to get lessons too. Saturday sessions will continue through the end of June. Even if you haven’t joined please stop by weekday mornings to watch the games.

Thanks to the Captains, Committee People and Officers you can enjoy the Bocce experience. Like all the other activities the few make everything work. Thankfully, quite a few people stepped up to help the last 3 years. I myself, now, am stepping down as President. So, if one more member will take on a little responsibility I can support them through the first couple of months. I will always be around since I love Bocce and will remain as a Captain. PLEASE offer us a little of your time to keep Bocce going. It won’t be a job and it won’t be time-consuming. Every possible document is computerized.

All schedules are easy to change, and the paperwork is now minimal. The officer team is active only 6 months, semi-active 4 months and the time commitment will be mostly 2 or 3 hours a week with 3 or four weeks of 15- 20 hours. We also could use one more person for three or four hours a month. Basically, it’s a communications position for the HCS website and the Southwind. Will someone make sure that the website is updated with the scores from Flo and pictures from Luda?

This person would also submit the monthly article usually written by the President to the Southwind.
BOCCE WORKOUTS ON SATURDAY S: MAY 5th, 12th, 19th and 26th.

See you at the courts.

MARCH 2018

Winter is almost gone. Cheer up, ONLY 1 MORE MONTH and we will be enjoying Bocce outdoors
on the courts! I can’t wait.

My officers and committee people would like to extend you an invitation to join. You only have
a few more Fridays to sign up. WE are looking for new friends and new players. We are again
holding Saturday training and practice this will make it simple for you neophytes to join the fun.
And it will be an opportunity for most of us to come out of hibernation. Our first Bocce Saturday will be
April 7th at 1:30pm.

The season officially starts on May 7th and each team plays 1 day a week for 20 weeks. The season
ends the third week in September. Meanwhile in March we continue our Polar Bear Bocce. Although
only a few members took advantage, we play a ‘pick-up’ game on a warm Saturday or Sunday
morning at 2:30.

We need more players and substitutes. Substitutes must be available at least two days a week and
will be called a day or two before, to play. Most of all we need captains. This is urgent. As I have
said “no captains, no teams”. The responsibility is minimal and skill level doesn’t matter. Step
up and be a captain or committee person. 36 of us are enthusiastically running Bocce. I am not
asking any big sacrifice. What’s the big deal? You will get support from all 12 of the officers and
committee members. Contact us at [email protected]aol.com. Also, as I said at the last meeting I will
step down in November with the completion of my third season.

My goal has been to make things more organized, more interesting and more fun. We will for example
do something during or after every membership meeting such as enjoying a current movie right in
the auditorium.

Finally, I want to thank my Officers, committee people and Captains for pitching in... See you at
the April 18th Membership Meeting. Bocce and friends - the fun never ends.

FEBRUARY 2018

Winter is on the way out finally. Cheer up, ONLY 2 MORE MONTHS and we will be enjoying Bocce outdoors on the courts!

My officers and committees would like to extend you an invitation to join. You only have a few more Fridays to sign up. WE are looking for new friends and new players. We will again hold Saturday training and practice for the month of April. This will make it simple for you neophytes to join the fun. And it will be an opportunity for most of us to come out of hibernation. Our first Bocce Saturday will be April 7th at 10:30 - 11:45am.

The season officially starts on Monday May 7th and the season extends 20 weeks with every team playing 1 day a week. Each player plays 2 weeks in a row with the third week off. At the end of the season we have an outstanding Gala Party which is include in your dues. Ask any of our 175 members.

Meanwhile in February and March we will continue our Winter Warrior Workouts. We play a ‘pick-up’ game on warm Saturdays or Sundays at 3pm. Yes, there will be days with the temperature above 40 degrees.

As mentioned, sign up in the auditorium any Friday. We want and need more players and substitutes. Substitutes must be available at least two days a week and will be called the day before, to play. Most of all we need captains. This is urgent. As I have said “no captains, no teams”. The responsibility is minimal and skill level doesn’t matter. Step up and be a captain. 36 of us are enthusiastically running Bocce. I am not asking any big sacrifice. What’s the big deal? Be a Captain or committee person. You will get support from all of the officers and other committee members. Contact us at [email protected]

We value ideas. My goal has been to make things more interesting and more fun. We will for example do something during or after every membership meeting in the auditorium, such as playing the Bean Bag Toss.

Finally, I want to thank my Officers, committee people and Captains for pitching in. See you at the Thursday, Feb 8th Membership Meeting. Come enjoy the refreshments and a Bocce movie after the game.

Bocce and friends - the fun never ends

The Playoffs are here. It’s been an exciting and funfilled summer season. The next couple weeks will be especially interesting. On Sunday, September 11th the playoffs will begin at 9 am and the Gala Luncheon at 1:00. Then, the 10-game Fall Bocce League resumes on Saturday, September 16th at 9:30. Subs are still needed and may signup. Check with Vinny or Pete.

Our last membership meeting of the year will be in November. It is an especially important meeting. EVERYONE should attend. There will be a couple of items to vote on, including new officers.

As in the past we would appreciate any wine or liquor you donate for the Gala. Many people have donated a bottle
of wine or liquor. Any contribution would also be appreciated. As you know all donations will be used as prizes at
the Gala Luncheon. All proceeds will be used to subsidize the Luncheon. Keep in mind these important dates:

Wednesday, September 6th Last day for make-up games
Sunday, September 10th 9 am playoffs start
Sunday, September 10th Gala Luncheon 1 pm Auditorium

We’ve been enjoying Bocce for two months now and also have started playing against Holiday Heights on Saturdays. Next year we just might expand the Intercommunity Bocce to more communities and make it a three month season. Those of you who are missing the fun and friendly competition can sign up for the fall league which will actually start in August. Membership is only $12.00 and will include a party the first Sunday of November.

Practice and training for non-members and members is every Saturday morning 9:30-11. We are especially looking to see the newest homeowners of Holiday City. Join the fun!

We are going to hold our first annual landscaping and painting day Saturday July 29th, weather permitting. Call Pete to sign up. 732-505-1133.

Joan and her phone committee will continue to keep the members (without emails) up to date on important events.

Tony, our Treasurer, has stepped up again. He is coordinating our intercommunity games with Holiday Heights and was responsible for getting our T-shirts made. He can order more if enough of you want them.

Our updated calendar is now available. Our membership meeting remains Aug 10. It will be a very important one. Non-members are welcome.

I am far from content with the progress I made, even though everyone seems quite content…If you want me to continue improving I only ask one thing and one thing only: an additional board member to share a little of the load and oversee one or two new events.

That person would start immediately with very little to do but learn. Starting in the new year (December) they would assume responsibility. A couple hours a week (a range from zero to 4 hours) would suffice to contribute to Bocce’s success. You can count on me to back you up. You only have to commit to one year. Most things could be done according to your schedule and not interfere with your life. Call me, please.
