FROM THE DESK OF MAYOR JOHN BACCHIONE

In my first year as Mayor of Berkeley Township, we have accomplished many great things.
Here are some notable highlights for 2024:

  • Through adjustments in overtime, and a reduction in staff (through attrition), we have been able to save approximately 1.5 million dollars. This money can be returned to surplus and help us with our spending cap.
  • Requested and received a $2.8 million grant to replace four failing drainage culverts in Holiday City.
  • Replaced a collapsed drainage pipe that jeopardized utilities and foundations of two houses on Bonaire Dr.
  • Currently in the process of securing approximately $1.5 million in DPW equipment from the Infrastructure Bank.  Berkeley Township has been approved for 100% loan forgiveness for the equipment and soft costs.
  • This equipment will be an integral part of maintenance and repair to our stormwater system.
  • Researched and entered a contract for a brand-new website for Berkeley Township. The new site will not only enhance transparency, but be more user-friendly, and comply with federal and state ADA laws.
  • Awarded a contract to ADP to modernize our payroll system.  Currently employees use paper timecards. The new electronic system will save time for department heads having to manually enter employees time each pay period.
  • Manitou Park School House:  In August, we began working on the Manitou Park School House.
In conjunction with local civic groups the plans and funding are finalized for Phase I (Exterior – Roof, Windows, siding and asbestos removal).   We anticipate the bidding process to be complete by late April and construction to begin over the summer.
  • Non-profit Tunnel to Towers is coming to Bayville to help fight veteran homelessness. Project will contain 99 apartments and 24 one-story houses. There would also be 24/7 onsite support services.
  • Continued the successful FREE Sounds of Summer Concert Series at Veterans Park.
  • Received final DOT approval for the installation of the traffic light at Hickory & Route 9.
  • Officiated 41 weddings in 2024.
  • Helped cut the ribbon and open 8 new businesses in town.
