A Message from Councilwoman Sophia Gingrich - April 2020

The April birthstone is a Diamond.  This is the traditional birthstone for those born in April, symbolizing bliss, curiosity, delicacy, departure, lasting pleasures, playfulness, and tenaciousness.  The birth flower for April is the Daisy or Sweet Pea

  • April 1st is also known as April Fools Day.  April Fools' Day is a light-hearted comedic day of cheer, practical jokes and hoaxes.
  • April 9th  -  April 16th: Passover is one of the most important religious festivals in the Jewish calendar. Jews celebrate the Feast of Passover (Pesach in Hebrew) to commemorate the liberation of the Children of Israel who were led out of Egypt by Moses.
  • April 12th: Easter for the year 2020 is celebrated/ observed on this Sunday. Easter is the most important holiday on the Christian calendar.  Many churches hold special services on Easter Sunday, which celebrate Jesus Christ's resurrection after his crucifixion.  It marks the end of Holy Week, the end of Lent, and the last day of the Easter Triduum (starting from the evening of Maundy Thursday, through Good Friday, Holy Saturday, and Easter Sunday), as well as the beginning of the Easter season of the liturgical year.  The resurrection represents the triumph of good over evil, sin, death, and the physical body.
  • April 19th, is Orthodox Easter and is celebrated on the first Sunday, after the first full moon, following the vernal equinox and always after Jewish Passover.
  • April 22nd is Earth Day, which seeks to highlight and promote efforts dedicated to the protection of the environment
  • April 26th, is Arbor Day, a celebration of trees and their importance to providing shelter, stabilization for the ground, and beauty to the beholder.

"And Spring arose on the garden fair,
Like the Spirit of Love felt everywhere;
And each flower and herb on Earth's dark breast
rose from the dreams of its wintry rest."
Percy Bysshe Shelley, The Sensitive Plant

TIPS FOR CONSUMERS

The Contractor must have a NJ Consumer Affairs Registration/License  number and it should resemble this style number  (#13VH12345600)
  • Contact Consumer Affairs to see if this NJ  registration/license is good and  if consumers have filed any complaints against the contractor and to ensure the contractor is registered.
  • Get written estimates from at least three contractors.
  • Ask the contractors how long they have been in business, if they have liability insurance (as required by law), and whether they will be using subcontractors on the project.
  • Contact the references your contractor gives you. Ask the referenced person whether the job was completed on time, whether there were any unexpected costs, whether the workers showed up on time and cleaned up when they finished, and whether they would use the contractor again.
  • Ask your contractor about his or her professional affiliations and confirm the information with those organizations.
  • Do not pay for the entire job up front. The customary arrangement is one-third in advance, one-third halfway through the job and one-third upon completion. Do not pay with cash.

KNOW THE LAW
Obtain a written contract. Contracts for home improvement projects costing $500 or more must be written and must include the legal name and business address of the contractor as well as a start date, a completion date, a description of the work to be done, and the total price.
