FEBRUARY UPDATE

The next meeting of Silver/Holiday V.F.W. Post 10185 will be held on Thursday, February 7th, at 1:00 PM at the Silver Ridge Park West Clubhouse, 145 Westbrook Drive, Silver Ridge Park West. We hold our meetings on the first Thursday of every month.
 
We meet in the daytime, so that you do not have to drive at night. To join our post, just bring a copy of your Discharge (DD-214) to our meeting and you will be signed up right away. You’ll receive a hardy welcome and refreshments before the meeting. You will also have a chance to talk with fellow Veterans and make new friends. If you need a ride to the meeting or just want more information, call Past Commander Ray Opland at 732-505-0644.
 
Friday, February 2nd is Groundhog Day.
 
Thursday, February 8th, the Boy Scouts of America was founded in 1910. V.F.W. 10185 is a proud supporter of the Boy Scouts of America.
 
Tuesday, February 12th is Lincoln’s Birthday.
 
Thursday, February 14th is Valentine’s Day. Do not forget your loved ones.
 
Monday, February 18th is President’s Day.
 
Tuesday, February 26th, at 7:00 pm V.F.W. Post 10185’s Officers will attend V.F.W. District 12’s meeting at V.F.W. Post 10118, Forked River, New Jersey, where the latest V.F.W. Programs and events will be discussed.
 
The Military Order of the Cooties is looking for new members. The Cooties are called, “The Fun Group” of the V.F.W. All members of our post are also eligible to join the Cooties. Their “Pup Tent” meets in V.F.W. Post 9503 at 383 Veterans Blvd., Bayville, NJ. To get an application call Larry Kelly at 732-269-5103 or Past State Commander Conrad Hoffman at 732-929-9656.

Tuesday, November 6th is the 29th Anniversary of the Berlin Wall being torn down in Germany.
 
Tuesday, November 6th is Election Day. Get out and vote.
 
Sunday, November 11th is Veterans Day at 11:00 am. V.F.W. Post 10185 Color-guard, Post members and their Wives will attend the Veterans Day Ceremony at Timothy E. Ryans Funeral Home, 145 St. Catherine Blvd, Toms River. All Veteran organizations and the public are invited to attend. Refreshments will be served after the ceremony.
 
Sunday, November 11th also marks the 101 years that Veterans Day has been recognized as a day for all Americans to honor and celebrate the sacrifices made by Veterans for our Freedom. Remember to fly your flag on Veterans Day.
 
Tuesday, November 22nd is Thanksgiving Day. Let’s all remember to give thanks for all we have received and the freedom we enjoy.
 
Tuesday, November 27th at 7:00 pm V.F.W. Post 10185’s Officers will attend V.F.W. District 12’s meeting at V.F.W. Post 9603 Bayville, New Jersey, where the latest V.F.W. Programs and events will be discussed.

Monday, October 8th is Columbus Day (Observed)

Post Member Training will be held September 23rd, at Post 2290, Manville, NJ, September 30th at Post 679, Glassboro, NJ and October 13th, at Post 4591, Hasbrouck Heights, NJ. Any officer or member, who would like to attend, please let Quartermaster Ray Opland know. The Manville Post is the closest to our Post and we need to get names in as soon as possible.

Tuesday, October 30th at 7:00 pm V.F.W. Post 10185’s Officers will attend V.F.W. District 12’s meeting at V.F.W. Post 4703 Jackson, New Jersey, where the latest V.F.W. Programs and events will be discussed.

Wednesday, October 31st is Halloween. Watch out for the Ghosts and Goblins.

Friday, September 2nd is VJ Day; this is the 73rd Anniversary of the Japanese Surrendering to U.S. General Douglas MacArthur and General Jonathan Wainwright. General Wainwright was being honored at the ceremony because he was a former P.O.W. Held by the Japanese Army and a survivor of the infamous “Bateen Death March”. This historic event took place aboard the Battleship
Missouri, anchored in Tokyo Harbor, ending WW II on September 2nd, 1945.
 
Monday, September 3rd is Labor Day, and September 10th is Rosh Hashanah.
 
Tuesday, September 11th is Patriot Day.
 
Wednesday, September 19th is Yom Kippur.
 
Friday, September 23rd is the beginning of Fall.
 
On Tuesday, September 25th at 7:00 pm, V.F.W. Post 10185’s Commander Gerald LaRocque and his staff will attend V.F.W. District 12’s meeting at V.F.W. Post 8867, Brick, where the latest V.F.W. Programs and events will be discussed. Any other post member wishing to attend can call

Saturday, September 29th is V.F.W. Day. The Veterans of Foreign Wars was established on September 29th, 1899. That is 119 years of fighting for Veterans Rights. You can join the fight for
Veterans Rights by becoming a member of V.F.W. Post 10185; we need your support. To get an

glad you did.

The 119th National V.F.W. Convention will be held in Kansas City, MO from July 21st to July 25th. Any
post member wishing to be a Convention Delegate may call Quartermaster Raymond Opland at 732-

Friday, July 27th, marks the 65th Anniversary of the ending of the Korean War. The monument to the Korean War is located at the Boardwalk and Park Place in Atlantic City, N.J. There is usually a ceremony held there every year by the local Veteran organizations, so that the Korean War will never be known as the “Forgotten War.”
 
For the Veterans Fighting the Global War on Terrorism against ISIS, you are eligible to join the Veterans of Foreign Wars. The eligibility dates are June 15, 2014 – TBD. For more information, go to: www.VFE.org;Join/Eligibility.

Sunday, June 3rd, at noon, V.F.W. Post 8867, Brick, New Jersey, District 12 will be holding their
Memorial Services for the members that have passed away in the V.F.W. and the Ladies Auxiliary.
The installation of Officers for both organizations will be following. 
 
Tuesday, June 5th, is the General Election. Get out there and VOTE!
 
Wednesday, June 13th, through Saturday, June 16th, the New Jersey State V.F.W. will hold their
Annual Convention in Wildwood, NJ. Any Post member wishing to be a Convention Delegate can

The month of May is the start of the V.F.W. “Buddy Poppy” drive. So please be generous when you see our Veterans handing out Poppies at local business areas. Remember when you wear a “Buddy Poppy” you not only help needy and disabled Veterans; you also honor those who sacrificed so much for our freedom.
 
Monday, May 7th, is Vietnam Veterans’ Remembrance Day.
 
Sunday, May 13th is Mother’s Day.
 
On Saturday, May 19th at 10:00 am, Holiday City at Berkeley First Aid Squad is holding their Armed Forces Day and Memorial Day Ceremony and Post 10185 Color Guard and members are invited to attend.
 
On Sunday, May 27th, at 1:00 PM Post Commander James Egan, the Color Guard, post members and their wives will attend the Memorial Day ceremony at the Silver Ridge Park West Clubhouse, 145 Westbrook Drive, Toms River. All Veteran Organizations and the public are invited to attend.
 
After the ceremony is completed, refreshments will be served. For more information call Commander James Egan at 732-341-4905. 
 
Monday, May 28th, is Memorial Day. This last Monday in May has officially been designated Memorial Day. Water Loo, New York is considered the birthplace of Memorial Day because the people there, were the first to proclaim this day on May 5th, 1866. It was a day to honor all who died in the Civil War. Businesses were closed, graves were decorated with flowers and all flags were flown at half-mast.
 
June 13 through the 16th, the New Jersey State V.F.W. will hold their Annual Convention in Wildwood, NJ. Any post member wishing to be a delegate may call Quartermaster Raymond Opland at 732-505-0644 for more information.

On Tuesday, June 5th, 2018, the Honor Flight will have a free bus trip to Washington, D.C. for Southern New Jersey WWII and Korean War Veterans to see their memorials. This trip is sponsored by the students and faculty of Williamstown High School and V.F.W. Post 1616 with the help from local veteran and community groups.
